In 1935-1936, he carries out several landings in the snow with a Breda Ba.25. During WWII he fights in Libya and, at the controls of a Reggiane Re.2001 fighter plane of the 152nd Interceptor Squadrilla, he protects the naval convoys between Italy and Africa. During a mission, he is downed above Malta on 18 May 1942, and everely wounded. Captured by the British and taken to Scotland, he returns to Italy in April 1943.
