Galeazzo Ciano

Livorno, 1903-Verona, 1944

The Italo-Ethiopian War (1935-1936)

The son of Costanzo Ciano, a ‘hero’ of WWI and a fascist, in the 1920’s he starts his diplomatic career. Married to Edda Mussolini (1930), he climbs the hierarchy of the Fascist party and, in 1933, he is the head of the government’s press office. During the Italo-Ethiopian war, he heads the 15th Bombing Squadrilla (‘The Desperate’) that flies Caproni Ca.101 and Ca.133 aircraft. As the Minister of Foreign Affairs (June 1936-February 1943), between 1936 and 1939 he pursues a pro-German policy that results in the Pact of Steel (1939). As ambassador to the Vatican (February-July 1943), on 25 July 1943 he takes part in the motion of no confidence against the Duce. After the ‘Verona trial’, he is executed by a firing squad on 11 January 1944.
