A mechanic, after enlisting in the Italian Royal Air Force he serves in Italy in the 274th wide range Bombing Squadrilla (BGR) that flies Piaggio P.108B four-engine planes. He remains involved in an airplane accident in the skies of Pisa on 7 August 1941 as member of the crew guided by the pilot captain Bruno Mussolini. In the crash die the Duce’s son and another two troops, while Gottardi reports injuries not further specified. He is promoted to airman first class. Bronze Medal of Aeronautic Valor.
