Test Pilots and Experimenters

With a degree in industrial engineering, he joins the Italian Royal Navy (1903) and obtains a second degree in naval and mechanical engineering. He is the creator of the seaplane version of the Farman biplane that he tests in 1911 at the aerodynamics laboratory built by himself in La Spezia. Later, he creates a first model of a torpedo bomber, oversees the building of the seaplane carrier ‘Elba’ (1914), designs a floating hangar for airships, as well as the first remotely controlled bomb. After being transferred to the Italian Royal Air Force, he dies while testing a parachute. The Experimental Centre for Aviation and the city of Guidonia have been named in his honour.
