Enlisted in WWI as a volunteer, he is transferred to the Flight School and trained on Caproni bombers. In 1916 he obtains his military pilot’s licence and is promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. Assigned to the 8th Squadrilla he then transfers to the 2nd (Caproni Ca.32 and Ca.33). In October 1917, together with D’Annunzio, Pagliano, Gori and others, he bombs Cattaro. After engaging in various dogfights in the skies of the Carso and Istria regions, he moves to Trentino. During an action over Caldonazzo, he is hit by the Albatros D.III of aces Julius Arigi, Josef Kiss and Josef von Maier, and crashes in Val d’Astico. The distinctive emblem painted on the fuselage of his airplane is an ‘Ace of Clubs’. Gold Medal of Military Valor.
