The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939)

As a young officer, in the early post-war period he is assigned to the 1st Army in Trentino (1919-1923). In 1924 he obtains his military pilot licence on an Ansaldo SVA. Transferred to the Air Force as a second lieutenant (1926), he volunteers for Libya (1927) where he takes part in reconquering Fezzan and Gebel (1928-1930). After participating in the Decennial Cruise (1933) with a SIAI Marchetti S.55X seaplane, in 1937 he is in Spain with the 29th Bombing Group (SIAI S.79). He fights on the western front (9th Bomb Wing ‘Francesco Baracca’) and in northern Africa. He is downed on 16 December 1940. Gold Medal of Military Valor and Gold Medal of Aeronautic Valor.
