A student in architecture, he enlists in the Military Engineering Specialists battalion (1914). In 1915 he joins the Aviation Service. As a military pilot, he is assigned to the 6th Bombing Squadrilla that flies Caproni Ca.32 aircraft. In 1916 he participates in a raid over Ljubljana and, with the 7th and then the 8th Squadrilla, he targets the Austro-Hungarian base of Pola (1917). In the post-war period, he serves with the 7th Night Bombing Wing (1924); for three years (1925-1928) he participates in the recapture of Cyrenaica with the 12th Squadrilla. Transferred to the Guidonia Testing Center, he is then sent to Eritrea (1932-1935) to organise the aviation service.
